The “Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist” Program is a voluntary program to accomplish the following objectives:
- To upgrade the professionalism of individuals in the field of commercial horticulture and the industry itself;
- To increase the education and pride of green industry employees; and
- To inform the public of increased industry professionalism and competence.

In order to apply for certification, an industry member must meet the following eligibility requirement:
- Employment in the horticulture industry, except for seasonal lay-offs, for three or more years. (Full-time employment, not part-time employment.) or
- Employment in the horticulture industry, except for seasonal lay-offs, for two years for individuals who have successfully completed
- two or more years of a post-high school course in horticulture.
In order to become a “Massachusetts Certified Horticul- turist” you must:
- Submit a completed application to the “Massachusetts Certi- fied Horticulturist” Board at the Massachusetts Nursery & Landscape Association, P.O. Box 387, Conway, MA 01341 and include the proper certification fee.
- Achieve a successful score on the certification examination.
- Sign the “Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist” Code of Ethics and submit it to the Board with your application for certification.
The certification examinations are administered twice annually in February and August. Specific dates, times and locations are announced to applicants through the mail.
Certification is valid for one year. The certification fee (including initial examination) is $55.00 for MNLA members and their employ- ees and $75.00 for others. The re-examination fee is $25.00.
Certification is renewable each year by means of earning eight (8) maintenance credits and the payment of the recertification renewal fee of $25.00 MNLA members/$35.00 non-member. Maintenance credits will be awarded upon submission of an MCH Credit Reporting Form.

This non-governmental, voluntary program to certify nursery industry em- ployees as professionals is administered by a Board of “Massachusetts Certi- fied Horticulturists” under the sponsorship of the Massachusetts Nursery & Landscape Association. Certification is not, however, limited to MNLA members and their employees.
