The National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN) was created to enhance nationalagricultural biosecurity by the early detection of introduced pests andpathogens. NPDN is a national network of Land Grant Universities linked by acohesive system designed to quickly detect and disseminate informationconcerning high consequence plant pathogens, arthropods, weeds, and otherbiological pests. The function of NPDN is not to implement quarantines or other regulatory actions relating to pests of concern, but to facilitate the early detection and identification of select agents. A First Detector is anyone who,in the course of their duties, is in a position to notice unusual outbreaks such as Extension personnel, crop consultants, pest control advisers, agriculture inspectors, National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) staff, green industry professionals, Master Gardeners, and growers.
